056 | Laura Roeder Shares How a Tiny Octopus Got Her to $5M!

Laura Roeder is the founder of Edgar, a social media automation tool designed to prevent status updates from going to waste. Laura has given talks at conferences like BlogHer and South by Southwest, and has spoken about the value of independent entrepreneurship at the White House. She’s also appeared in Forbes, Fast Company, Mashable, CNET, and other major publications.

Does it ever feel like some mundane rule is holding you back from fully taking the leap in your business?

This week’s guest, Laura Roeder, believes (and I agree), that sometimes rules are meant to be broken. Sometimes you need start taking action and then ask for forgiveness later.

Laura has bootstrapped Meet Edgar to $5 Million in revenue, which is an incredible feat. However, “only” making $5 Million in revenue was holding her back from  networking events that were looking for bigger, more profitable businesses.

That didn’t stop Laura, though! She went right ahead and applied to events that were looking for businesses making $10 Million or more. Want to know what happened? She was accepted! They were happy to bring her to the event because they wanted to have smaller businesses that were on track for major growth.

If Laura hadn’t broken the rules and applied for these events (that was technically out of her reach), she never would have had the opportunity.

What are YOU holding YOURSELF back from?

If you’re tired of holding yourself back because you’re afraid to step on toes by breaking the rules, this episode of Success Unfiltered is a MUST LISTEN!

Enjoy, and thank you for listening and tuning into Success Unfiltered!

Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode:

  • Michelle introduces Laura Roeder.
  • Laura shares how she and her team came up with the name, “Meet Edgar.”
  • When Laura was 22 years old she went to a networking event where 15 minute business coaching was provided. The “advice” Laura was given helped spur her career to much greater things (she shares the full story in this interview).
  • If Laura is feeling down over receiving a NO, or hearing awful feedback, she takes some time to reflect on the fact that we all have insecurities and that these insecurities don’t matter in the grand scheme of things.
  • Laura firmly believes that you do not need to be more experienced or have more success under your belt before you start taking major leaps in your business.
  • Laura shares how she attended an event that was meant for businesses making $10 million or more in revenue, and Meet Edgar was only at $5 Million in revenue.
  • If you’re ever trying to attend a conference, Laura suggests trying to pitch yourself as a speaker. The event may say NO, or they could say YES. You don’t know without asking.
  • “Entrepreneurs get the idea that rules don’t apply to us, because we start to see that so many of the limitations that people perceive are not real.” ~ Laura Roeder
  • Laura says that she’s never been intimidated by people older than her or of those in power. She always thinks, “What’s the worst that could happen?”
  • “Ask for forgiveness, not permission.” ~ Laura Roder
  • Laura’s most accomplished NO occurred recently when she was out trying to find investors for her new company, Ropig. She’d never done this before because she bootstrapped Meet Edgar.
  • Laura was so intimidated by the whole fund raising process that she put all of her eggs in one basket with only one investor. You’ll have to listen to learn how it turned out!
  • Laura shares how she managed to come up with $350,000 in just 30 days!
  • No matter what you’re working on, Laura believes that you must give everything your all, within your own constraints.
  • Laura started as a freelance web designer but began to struggle to understand how she was going to keep growing her company when her plate was already so full. Laura shares how she had to say good-bye to her clients and start taking her business in a different direction.
  • Laura talks about what the “anchor client” is and why they can sometimes be problematic.
  • Laura shares what she would tell her younger self.
